Updated Aug. 25, 2024 – The Savannah College of Art and Design’s net worth topped $1.5 billion in 2023 and the nonprofit university owns 98 parcels as of Oct. 24, 2023, according to this city memo. This property database and interactive map shows the location of properties SCAD has acquired since 1979, along with accompanying information about the sites, in an attempt to monitor the university’s growth. The information is based on sales and property records, tax and audit reports, SCAD’s website and news stories.  It is a resource that will be updated regularly. When plans for the properties are submitted or a building is purchased or sold, this will be noted.

Editor’s note: Information for some properties could not be identified. A “N/A” will indicate that this is the case. Some of the properties were purchased collectively and the purchase price covers the collective purchase. There will be a note indicating when this occurred. You will find that SCAD paid property taxes on some properties (eight in 2023). While SCAD is a nonprofit, the university still has to apply for the tax exemption for individual properties. For some properties, the university may not yet have applied for the exemption, the property may not qualify (restaurants such at the old diner on 1402 Habersham) or the property may be sitting unused. For instance, the university was assessed $24,283.21 in property taxes for 224 West Boundary St. in 2023 because the site has remained vacant since SCAD demolished the former Howard Johnson’s motor lodge at the site in late 2019. In September 2023, SCAD lost a tax exemption for what was the “Clarence Thomas Center for Historic Preservation” after the university stopped holding classes in the building about two years earlier. In the map, the taxed properties are identified by the SCAD icon with green dollar signs over it.

The university did not respond to a request for comment regarding plans for the property.

Note: This building is named for Virginia Jackson Kiah, although SCAD’s web page devoted to the structure fails to mention the late African American artist and educator who opened a community museum in the 1950s. After I mentioned the odd omission in a column about the university’s unwillingness to provide information about the whereabouts of Kiah’s art, SCAD eventually provided some photos of the art and general information, stating that many of the paintings were displayed “inside facilities” and in storage to protect against deterioration. Following my column, the university launched a virtual exhibition of the artwork, but still did not specify where the actual paintings could be viewed in person. If anyone sends me a photo of any of Kiah’s paintings currently on display, there is a free Savannah Agenda t-shirt in it for you.
